WSSM Opposes SB 79

Sacramento Continues its Efforts to Dismantle R1 neighborhoods, the latest attempt being SB-79

Over recent years, WSSM has been actively engaged in advocacy to protect R1 ( single family home) neighborhoods from California State legislative efforts to upzone them via government mandated one-size-fits-all legislation that would allow developers to build apartment buildings in the midst of single family communities.

While we have been successful in stopping these efforts in the past, this year, Senator Scott Wiener’s SB 79 to eliminate R1 zones within a half mile of transit or bus stops remains alive in the State legislature.  The bill would allow apartment building up to seven-stories to be constructed next to homes.

As part of our efforts in influence the City Council to support Council File 25-0002-S19 which would add LA City’s name to those cities who oppose SB 79, WSSM President Barbara Broide submitted an article to CityWatch that was published on the day of the LA City Council’s consideration of a motion to oppose SB 79. The article can be read here

WSSM understands the need to provide for more density and housing. We joined with United Neighbors to advocate for new density to be focused on our commercial corridors where infrastructure can be more efficiently provided.

We have actively pressed for the City of Los Angeles to use its lobbying resources to oppose SB 79 in Sacramento.
