L.A. City Council Opposes SB 50!

On April 16, Los Angeles City Council voted 12 to 0 to oppose Senate Bill 50.

Authored by State Senator Scott Wiener, SB 50 is a controversial piece of legislation that would grant generous incentives to developers to build taller, denser projects in cities all over California.  SB 50 would deny local government any control over the planning process in designated areas, effectively allowing developers to build what they want, where they want – including 6 to 8 story apartment towers on what are now single-family (R1) streets.

Our CD5 councilmember, Paul Koretz, called SB 50 a “handout for developers” and CD11 councilmember Mike Bonin warned that the bill would lead to displacement of renters in lower-income sections of his district.

SB 50 would be particularly damaging to Westwood South and Ranch Park (see the interactive neighborhood wipeout HERE) so the Council’s strong stand against this top-down, profit-motivated bill is great news for our neighborhood!
